I see a lot of these crooked chimneys in the attics of old homes and finally asked my husband if he knew anything about them. Called a Witches Bend, an old wives tale contributes the slanting of chimneys as a means to keep witches from flying down the chimneys. Structurally there are several practical suggestions for such a slant. One suggestion I discovered that perhaps has merit, is that the slant is intentional. When a mason built the chimney after the roof was framed, the joists did not line up.

Anyway, it is a handsome home, but I wish they had not closed in the front porch.
