Before and After Old House Transformations

We can all use a bit of inspiration sometimes. Here are a few before and after old house transformations that may, or some may not, inspire you.

  1. This c.1922 Palatka, Florida, bungalow was a flip. Rehab was started by the owner, but their job kept them traveling. They did manage to give the exterior a facelift,  update the electrical, install new kitchen cabinets and sink, put in new light fixtures, and regraded the property for proper drainage. We recently featured this house on OHU50K. The house is now pending, but you can view the interior work that was started here.

2. Sometimes a remodel goes completely awry. The George Ruhland house is almost unrecognizable after the wart of a porch was added sometime after 1977. George Ruhland was the successful owner of the old Ruhland Brewery Company in Baraboo, Wisconsin. To see more photos of the current state of the home, click here.

3. The Ebenezer Alden House in Union, Maine, was built and owned by carpenter/woodcarver Ebenezer Alden in 1797, not long after he completed carvings for the mansion of General Henry Knox in Thomaston, Maine. The Alden House remained in the Alden family, through Victorian era alterations and 20th-century neglect, right up until 1965. It was subsequently purchased by Joe and Hazel Marcus, both avid antique collectors, who restored the home. This is the north parlor of the home as it has been restored.

4. This Southern Greek Revival in in Thomson, Georgia, was going to rack and ruin before a new owner saw its potential. Most of its historic fabric was preserved with just the porch railings, deck, and stairs being rebuilt with all new materials.
